Paris Menswear: Whimsical Fantasy

By admin
On Feb 2009 At 15:34

It may have been hidden behind charcoal grey and somber pinstripes, but there was a distinct element of fantasy at work during the Paris menswear collections—made all the more poignant by its darkness and restraint.

Some designers combined simple silhouettes with ultra-lavish materials, letting the fabrics take center stage. The Louis Vuitton collection was filled with practical, travel-ready pieces, but we were particularly seduced by their tantalizing color palette—rusty pumpkin, chocolate, plum—and luxurious textures of alligator, mink, silk and wool moiré. Dries Van Noten created even more traditional pieces in sleek techno-fabrics—from peacoats and trenches to crease-front trousers and pinstriped shirts—while YSL used cashmere, croc and leather to sex up voluminous jackets and cropped pants, reportedly inspired by hip-hop culture. The Gulf Takes LA

This year’s Grammy Awards may not have produced many sartorial surprises, but the influx of Lebanese designers on the red carpet certainly caught our attention. The oft-overlooked fashion nation has come into its own with a crop of emerging and seasoned designers who are now entering the American spotlight.

The most talked-about by far was Basil Soda, a designer who dressed pop-tart Katy Perry and Paula Abdul. The American Idol judge’s taxicab-hued goddess gown garnered mostly rancid reviews, while Perry’s cotton candy pink strapless column, which erupted in bejeweled bows at the waist, received a far warmer reception from critics. Although he’s relatively unknown Stateside, Soda boasts more than 20 years of experience in Middle Eastern couture houses, and is recognized for ornate gowns marked by architectural, corsage-like flourishes and liberal use of glitzy embellishments. Elaine Kim is the influential force behind Los Angeles boutique Ecru as well as fashion forward womenswear label Product. Now, after a decade-long sabbatical from fashion, she is launching her eponymous label. The debut collection is named after Gustav Klimt’s painting Expectation and offers a highly personal vision of decadence, opulence and sensuality.

The concise assortment of day-to-evening dresses and separates was inspired by the decorative richness of Klimt’s canvases as well as László Moholy-Nagy’s photographic studies of urban industrial texture. Read more:

New York Fashion Week: Bespoken Speaks Up

By admin

While long-lasting British labels such as Turnbull & Asser have dressed important figures from Winston Churchill to James Bond, the niche remains largely inaccessible to the younger, hipper set. Until now, that is. While rushing between shows, we happened upon Bespoken, a line that defies the stuffy tradition of upper class sophistication. The chic British label offers an updated version on the refinement of lines like Turnbull & Asser, while opening the door to a new era of masculine style.

Bespoken’s signature look consists of classic shirts and jackets with a twist. The blazers are shorter and more form fitting, with a subtle red detail on every collar and lapel. The shirts, too, are fitted and mod influenced, Read more:

Clothing

Fashion, by description, changes constantly. The changes may proceed more rapidly than in most other fields of human activity (language, thought, etc). For some, modern fast-paced changes in fashion embody many of the negative aspects of capitalism: it results in waste and encourages people “qua” consumers to buy things unnecessarily. Other people enjoy the diversity that changing fashion can apparently provide, seeing the constant change as a way to satisfy their desire to experience “new” and “interesting” things. Note too that fashion can change to enforce uniformity, as in the case where so-called Mao suits became the national uniform of mainland China. Read more:

Fashions are social phenomena common to many fields of human activity and thinking. The rise and fall of fashions has been especially documented and examined in the following fields:
*Architecture, interior design, and landscape design
*Arts and crafts

We have a lot of love for the Gap, not least because they paid for most of the things we bought while we were in high school (We repaid them, of course, with our youth. Fair trade!) We do have some residual loyalty, and when we’re in the market for, say, a t-shirt, we’ll give the Gap a try. But. It. Keeps on breaking our heart. Though we are sure that not everyone will be as incensed by the tiny chest pockets, logo sweats, and general mall-fashion-terror as we were, we stand by our selections, and demand they change these things before we spend money there again: Read more:

Designers Square Off: Sexy vs. Classy

A succession of Fashion Week shows over the weekend suggested that you’d better put down that muffin, dear. There are a lot of tight leather pants on the horizon. And leggings with little witch booties. The female behind is again in the fore of fashion, though skinny models hardly exercise the imagination. They’re like whirling toothpicks.
Learning that a discoing sex appeal has returned to the runways is a little like hearing that Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb are reuniting. Oh, really? Alexander Wang’s collection of black biker shorts, bodysuits and motorcycle jackets with foxtail fringe — spotlighted at the Roseland Ballroom and set to the beat of “Thriller” — was surprisingly old-hat. Mr. Wang won the top young designer awards last year, including the CFDA/Vogue Fund prize. Read more:
